Willyama High School - How far can teach.Rural take you?

Summary

teach.NSW travelled to Broken Hill, in far western NSW, and interviewed four people from Willyama High School. They were invited to talk about what makes them proud of their school and its community.

Pre-text

The video begins with an aerial shot looking down at Willyama High School, which is situated on the outskirts of the town. Over the course of the video, we are introduced to Erin Lever, a special education teacher, Grant Shepherd, the school principal, Maighan, a student at the school, and Daniel Edwards, a Technical and Applied Studies teacher.

The video is interspersed with scenes from the school grounds and classrooms, in which teachers are engaging with students, parents, and one another. There is an overall sense of community spirit and camaraderie.

Erin Lever

The school community at Willyama High School is beyond anything I have ever experienced before. The staff are so supportive of each other and students, and the time and effort put in by teachers for students is phenomenal.

Grant Shepherd

What I’m most proud of in our school is the relationships between staff, students, and parents. People really care for each other and inspire each other.

Maighan

My school’s pretty cool because the teachers are so friendly and personal with you. Like, you feel like you’re coming here and you’re going to be socialising and engaging with friends, while also getting the benefit of coming to school and learning.

Daniel Edwards

There is a good relationship amongst the cohort. We have regular barbeques and celebrate birthdays and all sorts of things, even Christmas, some of us hang around for Christmas, so it’s certainly a very comfortable and supportive environment.

Grant Shepherd

Come and be a part of our school!

Closing Scene

The video ends as it begins with an aerial view looking down upon Willyama High School, at the edge of Broken Hill, and the wide horizon beyond. An outline of the state of NSW appears with a dot indicating the approximate location of the town.
