Narrabri area - How far can teach.Rural take you?
Summary
teach.NSW travelled to Narrabri, in north-western NSW. T he team interviewed Josh O’Shea, a Hospitality Teacher at Wee Waa High School, to find out how he came to teach at Wee Waa High School and what he loves about the school and town communities.

The video begins with the township of Narrabri seen as an aerial view in full sun light. The words ‘teach.Rural - Narrabri area’ appear superimposed on screen.
Scene:
As Josh begins speaking as a voice over, the scene shows an extreme close up of a pair of hands chopping a cucumber into pieces. Cut to Josh speaking interview-style to camera. The name ‘Josh’ appears on screen. There is a mid-shot of him sitting in a room that is part of the Hospitality Facility of Wee Waa High School.
Josh:
“I was cheffing in Coffs Harbour. I was there for five years.”
Scene:
The scene changes and we hear Josh in voiceover to a profile shot of Josh working off a laptop in a kitchen within the Hospitality Facility, speaking and moving around the room. Scene cuts back to Josh speaking interview-style to camera. The scene changes to show Josh in an exterior view of a school veranda teaching a younger class in an outdoor classroom.
We hear Josh in voice over and while he is speaking the scene changes back to Josh’s profile shot in the kitchen of the Hospitality Facility. He stands in front of a laptop ; while his class is revealed in the kitchen classroom. He is seen moving between the hotplates, laptop, mixer and ingredients while giving the students instructions. Cut to Josh speaking interview-style to camera, while speaking off camera cut to a wide shot seen as an exterior view panning across the front of Wee Waa High School signage and entrance.
Josh:
“The opportunity came and I found an ad in the paper for scholarships for teaching, and applied and was lucky enough to win a scholarship and as part of that I ended up in Wee Waa and here I am.”
Scene:
Areal shot of Wee Waa High School; seen as an exterior view. Drone turns while flying over school in full sunlight. We hear Josh in voiceover with vision cutting to a wide shot with the sun glistening through the trees seen as an exterior view outside the high school, with some goal posts in the background.
While speaking we cut back to Josh speaking interview-style to camera and then in voiceover we see a wide shot seen as an exterior view of Josh standing on an oval at night coaching a small group of young men who listen to him coaching. They are all dressed in sports clothes.
While speaking in voice over, scene cuts to teenage boys playing and passing a rugby ball around to each other. Josh has the ball and runs to camera left with it. Josh stands on the oval watching one of the teenage boys throw a line out ball to a small group of teenagers waiting next to him. They lift up one of their team mates above their shoulders to catch the ball in a line out formation.
Josh:
“I found the town to be really welcoming and people would introduce themselves and were very friendly. We’ve made some really good friends, since we’ve moved out here.”
Scene:
We hear Josh in voice over while we see two teenage students dressed in their cooking uniforms work at separate benches in the school’s Hospitality Facility teaching classrooms. The student in the foreground is using a funnel to push out individual cake dough, the student in the background looks over her ingredients. While we hear Josh speaking we see a profile shot of previous female student pulling out backed cakes from an oven in the kitchen classroom. She holds the large tray and while she carries it away from the oven Josh is revealed in the background coming in to close the oven door.
Josh:
“We bring a lot of people in to do development on staff days.”
Scene:
Josh speaking interview-style to camera, while speaking cut to a wide shot of teacher’s staffroom with a voice over, seeing Josh in the middle of the staff group around a table, drinking, eating, sharing a laugh and a conversation.
Josh:
“Just to talk to the other teachers and bounce ideas off them is good too.”
Scene:
We hear Josh in voiceover while seeing a wide shot seen as an exterior view of the township in full sun light aerial view. Cut to Josh speaking interview-style to camera, while speaking cut to Josh with voiceover in wide shot walking across a road towards his car then cut to Josh speaking interview-style to camera.
Josh:
“We really like the house. It’s a three-bedroom place. Very, very handy to come out here and save money if that’s what you wanted to do. To come out, your rent’s subsidised, so it’s good.”
Scene:
Close up of Hospitality Facility signage seen as an exterior view, we hear Josh in voice over. While speaking, cut to wide shot over the shoulders of Josh’s students. We see Josh walking around teaching in the Hospitality Facility.
While speaking in voiceover we cut to mid shot of Josh pouring hot water into sink, close up of Josh’s hands filling two meat and vegetable sandwiches in the kitchen classroom of the Hospitality Facility.
Josh:
“Eleven years later I’m still here and don’t really have any plans to go anywhere yet. I enjoy it.”
Scene:
Josh at front of room seen as an exterior view teaching a younger class in an outdoor classroom in front of whiteboard, while speaking cut to over the shoulder shot of Josh, close up of student writing.
Josh:
“I really like it. It’s a good place to be.”
Scene:
We hear Josh in voice over and see a group shot of Josh standing next to his younger class seen as an exterior view in front of a mural painted on a wall outside of their school, looking at the camera.
Josh:
“Good, tight knit, little school, it’s tops.”
Final Scene:
A wide shot with the sun glistening through the trees seen as an exterior view. The words ‘How far can teach.Rural take you?’ appear superimposed on screen. An outline of the state of NSW appears underneath with a dot showing the approximate location of Narrabri, followed by the words ‘Find out more, www.teach.nsw.edu.au’.
