Approved teachers who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for the Teach and Learn Scholarship.
To apply for a Teach and Learn Scholarship for Specialist Teaching Areas, you will need to:
Download and complete all sections of the Teach and Learn Scholarship for Specialist Teaching Areas Application Form. This form is accessible via the ‘Apply now’ button on the Teach and Learn Scholarship webpage.
Email the principal's supporting statement to your principal and request that they complete it electronically and email it back to you.
Email the referee’s supporting statement to one referee and request that they complete it electronically and email it back to you.
Submit your application by emailing the completed application form, supporting statements and supporting documents to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Applications must be completed electronically. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
There is no closing date for the Teach and Learn Scholarship (Specialist Teaching Areas). Applications are accepted all year round.
You will be required to complete and submit the documents listed below as part of your application:
a current principal's supporting statement on the template provided
a referee’s supporting statement on the template provided
an application for enrolment or evidence of successful enrolment in non-award studies or a postgraduate program
photo identity card issued by the Australian Government or a state or territory government (this may take the form of a Working with Children or Vulnerable People card or a government issued occupational licence) to verify your identity.
It is a requirement that your current principal or their delegate complete the principal’s supporting statement. If the supporting statement is completed by a delegate, the form must be co-signed by the principal.
A selection panel will review applications shortly after the application is received. Your principal and referee may be contacted when assessing your application. We may also verify your employment details with the department’s Teacher Recruitment Unit.
Yes. Both successful and unsuccessful applicants are notified of the outcome via email once the selection process is completed.

Successful applicants are required to sign a Scholarship Agreement with the department, committing them to:
- successfully acquiring additional competencies in a specialist teaching area
- completing the approved postgraduate program within two years, or within the timeframe required in line with your conditions of employment
- for permanent teachers, remaining in the permanent full-time teaching position you are appointed to on completion of your studies for a minimum period of three years
- for temporary teachers, actively seeking employment within NSW public schools in the specialist teaching area of your scholarship.

The Teach and Learn Scholarship can support teachers for a maximum of two years.
For permanent teachers, you will need to complete the required studies in the agreed timeframe, in line with the conditions of your employment.
Temporary and permanent teachers can apply for up to eight (8) study leave days per year of full-time study (pro-rata for part-time studies). The study leave day(s) must be approved by your principal. Your principal can request for relief funds to be reimbursed to the school if a casual teacher was employed to replace you for the day(s).
An application form for study leave and request for relief funds will be provided to you if you are successful for a scholarship.
The financial benefit under the Teach and Learn Scholarship is capped at $20,000 per year of full time study. The $20,000 is based on a study load of 8 subjects ($2,500 per subject).
The scholarship payment will be calculated from the current semester/session/trimester/term of when the scholarship is granted. Subjects completed prior to the commencement date of the scholarship will not be paid.
You will receive the first scholarship payment once your scholarship is finalised and evidence of your enrolment into postgraduate studies has been received.
To receive further payments, you will be required to provide the Employment Programs Team with your academic transcript, showing the previous semester’s results along with evidence of enrolment for the next semester or year of study.
Scholars are paid in the form of an electronic funds transfer (EFT) directly into their nominated bank account during the department’s fortnightly pay cycle.
Scholars will receive an allowance of $500 per week (maximum of $5,000) while completing the university practicum. Temporary teachers must be engaged in temporary employment at the time they are required to complete their practicum to be eligible.
The department will not pay the equivalent upfront course contribution fee for any unit for which you receive advanced standing or academic credit for.
Scholarship payments will be paid directly to scholars in the regular pay cycle and taxed accordingly.
Any money paid to you by the department must be declared as assessable income on annual income tax returns. You will have tax withheld from your scholarship payments. HECS-HELP repayments may also be withheld.
