The steps you need to take to become a special education teacher through STEP depend on your current qualifications. The maximum amount of study you will need to complete is outlined below.

Approved primary or secondary teachers need to complete an approved post-graduate program at masters level in special education, inclusive education or sensory disabilities.

Other opportunities for future special education teachers

Special education teachers are in high-demand in NSW public schools. The department also offers the Every Student, Every School: Learning and Support Scholarship to support permanent DEC teachers and executives to complete a masters in special education, inclusive education and sensory disabilities.
