Subject Requirements
To become a qualified teacher librarian in NSW public schools, you must:
- be an approved primary or secondary teacher with the NSW Department of Education; and
- complete an approved postgraduate program at master’s degree level in teacher librarianship.
Teacher librarianship programs prepare graduates for years K - 12. Current staffing practices, however, restrict subject approval to the area of original mainstream teacher classification (e.g. a primary trained teacher is only entitled to the primary teacher librarian code and a secondary trained teacher is only entitled to the secondary teacher librarian code).
The following are approved postgraduate programs*:
- Charles Sturt University - Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship)
- Edith Cowan University - Master of Information Services (specialisation in Teacher Librarianship)
